What is Spyware?

A freeware application called Ad-Aware has been created to identify and remove commonly known advertising and "spyware" programs on your computer. These programs are often installed as part of another application and may be used to collect data about internet usage. Usually the data is then uploaded to a remote site without the user's knowledge.
Ad-Aware scans registry entries, files, and directories for signs of spyware, creates a report, and offers the user a chance to remove the software. The Adaware program is available at:
Go to the "download page" and make sure to get the latest version. Click on the executable to install the program. You will then be able to run the program from your start menu.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: ONLY DOWNLOAD AD-AWARE FROM LAVASOFT AND LAVASOFT MIRROR SITES! There is a copy of AdAware out there that causes damage.
The following programs are spyware. I see these programs on many computers and the people using these computers seem to value the program more than they do their own privacy:
Bonzai Buddy
Brilliant Digital (Kazaa users have this one)
Comet Cursor (very common - the method of delivery gets this product installed frequently)
CommonName
Gator (as common as the Comet Cursor)
OfferCompanion (if Gator is present - generally this one is too)
WebHancer (found this one on my own PC after downloading a really good game)
