PRINT A BLANK MONTHLY CALENDAR

You can print a blank monthly calendar to take notes.

Select File, New, Folder. Type a name for the folder, maybe "Blank Calendar." In the Folder Contains drop-down list, choose Appointment Items. Click Calendar in the Select Where To Place The Folder list. Click OK. Click the new folder, which is called Blank Calendar, in the folder list. Click File, Page Setup, and choose the Monthly Print Style. Then, click Print.

ASSOCIATION IS ALL WRONG

"I have lost previews of graphics files while browsing in My Computer. I installed a graphics program that changed the association, then I uninstalled it, but I cannot get the association back.

First select View, As Web Page. Now you can preview files before opening them in My Computer or Windows Explorer by pointing the mouse at the file but not clicking it--in other words, hovering.

Another method: Here's how to make sure you can always view image files in Internet Explorer 5 rather than in a slow-loading graphics program.

First find an image file (such as a GIF or JPEG file) on your hard drive. Then, in Windows Explorer, press the Shift key while right-clicking the image file. Choose Open With from the pop-up menu that appears. Select Iexplore in the list of programs that displays in the Open With dialog box. Check "Always use this program to open this type of file". Use this tip to change the association on just about any type of file.

PRINT THE ADDRESS BOOK

It may be a good idea to print out your entire Address Book, just in case of a problem that causes a loss of access to your data.

Start by clicking Contacts. Select File, Print. Choose the print style you desire. Card Style will print your contacts exactly as you see them on the screen. Then, click Print. Now you have a hard copy of your Contacts List, even if your computer crashes.

A SHORTCUT FOR USING THE FIND COMMAND

If you're working with a large document and you're looking for many occurrences of a single word using the Find function, having the Find window open during your search can be a nuisance. The window obscures part of the text, and it can be difficult to ascertain context without all the words in view. There is a little trick that makes using Find much easier in these situations. Select Edit, Find and type the word you're looking for as you would normally. After clicking the Find button once, close the Find window. In the lower-right corner of your document window, notice that the up and down arrows are now highlighted blue. Clicking either of these buttons automatically searches either up and down for your previously entered word. You can repeat this process as many times as necessary, without that annoying Find window obscuring your document.

INTERNET EXPLORER 5

Internet Explorer 5 must store the URLs in my Favorites list somewhere, but I can't find the file. What I want to do is somehow copy the URLs I use at work to my machine at home.

From IE 5, choose File, Import And Export. The Import/Export wizard appears. Click the Next button. The Import/Export Selection screen opens. Select Export Favorites from the list of options. Click Next. The Export Favorites Source Folder page appears. Select the topmost Favorites folder (if it's not already selected). Click Next. In the following screen, choose the Export To A File Or Address option. Then enter a path and file name in the corresponding text box. For instance, we chose:

C:\windows\desktop\bookmark.htm

Click Next, and in the following screen click Finish. The Favorites file appears on your system (in this example, on the desktop).

Now copy that file to a floppy disk, or attach it to a message and e-mail it to yourself. Use the Import/Export wizard on your office machine to import the file, and your bookmarks will follow you to work--just like the obedient puppies they are.

PRINTING A DIRECTORY LIST

Solution #1

Visit http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/PrintDirectory.htm

Solution #2

  • Open a text editor, such as Notepad, and type the following lines into a new document: (assuming the printer you wish to use is connected to printer port #1).

CD %1
DIR >LPT1
  • Save the two-line file into your Windows\Command folder, and call it PRINTDIR.BAT.
  • Find the file in Explorer, right click on it, and select Properties.
  • Click on the Program tab, turn on the Close on Exit option, choose Minimized from the Run list, and click Ok.
  • Next, run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
  • Open My Computer\ HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ Directory\ shell.
  • Select New from the Edit menu, and then select Key.
  • Type Print for the name of this new key, and press Enter.
  • Highlight the new Print key, select New from the Edit menu, and then select Key again.
  • Type command for the name of this new key, and press Enter.
  • Double-click on the (default) value in the right pane, and type C:\Windows\Command\PRINTDIR.BAT (assuming that C:\Windows\ is your Windows folder).
  • From now on, when you right-click on a folder icon, you can click Print to print its contents.

  • Note: this assumes that your printer is connected to the LPT1 port, which is true for most users. However, if your printer is connected over a network or you have more than one printer, you need to change LPT1 to the correct port.

Print To Multiple Printers From The Win98 Explorer

You can easily print most any document on your computer by simply right-clicking on the file in the Windows 98 Explorer and selecting "Print" from the drop-down menu. This is fine if you have only one printer on your system. What if you have more than one printer? Here's a tip that will help you send that document to the printer of your choice.

1 - On the desktop, double-click the "My Computer" icon.

2 - In the My Computer window, double-click the "Printers" icon. Move the Printers window to a corner of your screen.

NOTE: In Windows ME choose RUN, SETTINGS, PRINTERS

3 - Click Start and chose "Programs" then "Windows Explorer."

4 - In the left Explorer pane, navigate to the "C:\Windows\Sendto" folder.

5 - Right-click and drag a printer icon from the Printers window to the Sendto folder.

When the warning box appears asking you whether you want to create a shortcut, click OK.

6 - Repeat Step 5 for each printer you want to add to the Send To menu.

From now on, to print a document directly from a folder or Explorer window:

1 - Right-click the document.

2 - Choose "Send To" from the drop-down menu, and then choose the printer of your choice from the menu.
